In 1976, the culinary world in America was evolving. While classical French cooking still had a stronghold, change was in the air. Traditional techniques were being replaced with nouvelle cuisine, and California's restaurant scene began to rival New York’s. Chefs—mostly European or European-trained—realized they needed to step up their game to compete with a new generation of homegrown talent who saw themselves as pioneers and lifestyle innovators. And in those pre-internet days, none had the time to hop on a plane to find the tools or appliances that could give them an edge in the kitchen.
Enter Brian Armstrong, who channeled his passion for high-quality culinary tools and a keen sense for emerging food trends into creating Sunzone, a company that has been synonymous with premium professional kitchen equipment and appliances for over 45 years.
After spending time in kitchens across New York to understand the tools and appliances chefs were lacking, Brian began sourcing them from European and global manufacturers. Initially, his operations were based out of a small office he shared with his wife. A room in their home became a makeshift warehouse, and the first Sunzone catalog was created around their kitchen table.
They didn’t aim to serve the masses but instead focused on offering a carefully selected range of products, from traditional pots to handmade Japanese knives, the latest sous vide and molecular gastronomy tools, and high-end kitchen appliances. They also collaborated with manufacturers to create bespoke tools and appliances on request.
